UK military personnel dies in Ukraine road accident

A member of the United Kingdom armed forces has died in a road traffic incident in Ukraine, the UK Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

The incident occurred on Saturday and was not linked to hostile action, according to the BBC.

The deceased’s family has been notified and has “requested a period of grace before further details are released”, the MoD said.

The identity, military service and role of the personnel have not been disclosed.

The UK government has previously confirmed that a small number of British military personnel are in Ukraine to assist the country’s armed forces and provide security for diplomatic staff.

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting expressed his condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased.

He wrote on social media, “This is very sad news for the family and for those grieving with them in our armed forces.”

The death comes after a 28-year-old British paratrooper was killed in Ukraine in December while observing the testing of a new defensive capability away from the front line.

He was the first British armed forces member to be killed in Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of the country in 2022.

The latest incident also comes amid continued British support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.

On Sunday, a Russian drone struck and damaged a train in Yahodyn, near the Ukraine-Poland border, shortly after former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and senior European security officials had travelled through the area on another train along the same route.

No casualties were recorded in that attack.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had targeted “railway infrastructure” in western Ukraine, while Ukraine’s state railway company said the intended target “could have been the diplomatic train”.

The UK remains one of Ukraine’s key allies and has continued to provide military and diplomatic support to Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion.
