The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects linked to a violent attack on a joint team of police and military personnel in Enugwu-Agu village, Oba Ofemili, in the Awka North Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred on April 13, 2025, led to the torching of a military operational vehicle stationed at a checkpoint in the community.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects—35-year-old Uche Egwu and 32-year-old Jindo Onyeka—were apprehended on June 2 by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, during a follow-up operation.

“The two suspects were positively identified and have since confessed to their involvement in the attack. They also provided credible information that is assisting investigators in tracking down other individuals connected to the crime,” Ikenga disclosed.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the attack, describing it as a “direct challenge to the resolve of Nigeria’s security forces and an assault on the soul of the nation.”

He commended the security personnel for their restraint and professionalism, noting that no lives were lost during the incident.

“This was an unprovoked act of violence against those who dedicate their lives to safeguarding the nation. The gallant response of our operatives prevented a greater tragedy,” Orutugu said.

He urged his men to widen the scope of the investigation to ensure that all those involved, especially the fleeing suspects, are brought to justice. The police chief also called for greater collaboration between the public and security agencies to protect those who put themselves at risk for the country’s safety.

“We must act together to shield our security forces. Attacking them is not just a criminal act—it is a threat to national unity and stability,” he added.

The police command assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all individuals connected to the crime, while also reiterating its commitment to maintaining law and order across the state.
