Two dead as gunman attack US church

At least two people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after a gunman opened fire inside a Michigan church belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, authorities confirmed.

The attacker, a 40-year-old man from a nearby community, was shot dead on Sunday by officers who responded to the scene, Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye announced.

According to Renye, hundreds of worshippers had gathered for a service when the suspect rammed his vehicle into the church entrance, stepped out, and began shooting with an assault rifle.

Videos circulating on social media captured the church engulfed in flames. Investigators believe the fire, which was later brought under control, was deliberately set by the suspect.

Chief Renye told reporters that while the blaze had been extinguished, additional victims might be discovered once the area was fully secured.

He also confirmed that 10 people with gunshot wounds had been rushed to a hospital.

A nearby resident recounted the chaos to AFP: “My husband heard people screaming, one lady yelling for help.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer denounced the violence, calling it heartbreaking for the Grand Blanc community.

“Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” she said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump also reacted, describing the attack as “horrendous.” “The suspect is dead, but there is still a lot to learn,” he wrote on Truth Social.

The FBI has joined local police in the investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X “Violence in a place of worship is a cowardly and criminal act. Our prayers are with the victims and their families during this terrible tragedy.”

Grand Blanc, home to about 7,700 residents, is situated roughly 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Detroit.

The tragic incident occurred just a day after the passing of Russell Nelson, the 101-year-old leader of the Mormon church.
