The Kabiru Turaki–led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has announced plans to challenge a judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which on Friday declined to grant its request for an order of mandamus.
The court ruled that granting the application would amount to reviewing decisions of courts of coordinate jurisdiction, a position the party said it had anticipated.
In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, and shared on the PDP’s official X account, the faction disclosed that it had directed its legal team to immediately file an appeal against the judgment.
“Our lawyers have been instructed to activate the appellate process without delay and to take all lawful steps necessary to protect the interest and position of our party,” the statement said.
Despite the ruling, the Turaki-led PDP insisted that the faction, which emerged from the Ibadan Convention, remains legally valid and unaffected by the court’s decision.
“Notwithstanding this judgment, the Kabiru Turaki–led Peoples Democratic Party remains legally intact and unshaken as we await the final and authoritative pronouncement of the appellate courts,” the party stated.
The faction urged its members and supporters to remain calm and steadfast, stressing that the ongoing legal battle should not cause panic within the party.
“There is absolutely no cause for alarm. Members are encouraged to remain resolute and committed as the rebirth movement remains firmly on course,” the statement added.
The development is the latest in a series of legal and political disputes arising from leadership tussles within the PDP, with rival factions seeking judicial affirmation of their legitimacy.
