Trump slams Norway over Nobel Peace Prize snub

United States President, Donald Trump, has renewed his verbal attack on Norway, describing the country in vulgar terms and saying Norwegian immigrants are unwelcome in the United States because he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump made the remarks on Sunday during a political rally in Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of the US midterm elections scheduled for next week.

According to Reuters, the US president linked his position on Norwegian immigrants to the Nobel Peace Prize, which he had hoped to win.

He also blamed immigration for recent unrest in France, saying he would welcome migrants from some countries but not Norway.

“Norway has become a shit house country, actually,” Trump said, using an expression he had previously applied to Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

He also declared that Norwegian immigrants were not welcome in the United States, saying, “because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize … So I don’t want anybody from Norway”.

However, there was no indication that Trump’s administration was considering any new official policy restricting immigration from Norway.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said the Nobel Committee operates independently of the government, stressing that the distinction had already been made clear to the US administration.

“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded them of that, if anyone is wondering, and that is still the case,” Eide told Norwegian national broadcaster NRK on Monday.

Norway’s foreign ministry declined to comment further on the matter, while the Norwegian Nobel Committee had not immediately responded to requests for comment.

Despite Trump’s remarks, Norway remains one of the world’s wealthiest countries by gross domestic product per capita, according to International Monetary Fund data.

The country’s sovereign wealth fund also recorded a profit of 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns, equivalent to $184.3bn, in the first half of 2026.

Earlier this month, Trump criticised Norway over his failure to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, describing the decision as an “indelible stain” on the country.
