Troops under the Operation FANSAN YAMMA have killed two suspected members of the Lakurawa armed group during separate security operations in Sokoto and Katsina States, while also recovering weapons and rustled livestock.
Military authorities said the operations were carried out as part of ongoing offensives targeting terrorism and banditry in the North-West region.
According to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8 Division and Sector 2 of the operation, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, troops acted on intelligence following a distress call in Sokoto State.
He explained that suspected fighters attempted to attack and set fire to a Nigerian Immigration Service facility in Ruwa Wiri village, Tangaza Local Government Area, but were intercepted by soldiers.
“Troops responded swiftly to a distress call reporting an attempted arson attack on a Nigerian Immigration Service facility by Lakurawa terrorists in Ruwa Wiri Village,” Osoba said.
“The troops engaged them in a firefight, neutralising two of the attackers, while others fled due to superior firepower.”
Following the encounter, soldiers reportedly combed the area and recovered two AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and a motorcycle abandoned by the fleeing suspects.
In a separate operation in Katsina State, troops on patrol in Jibia Local Government Area encountered armed men suspected of moving stolen cattle at Danya Bakwai settlement.
Military officials said the attackers fled after engaging troops, leaving behind dozens of livestock.
“During a fighting patrol in Jibia LGA, troops made contact with terrorists transporting rustled livestock,” Osoba added.
“The criminals abandoned the animals and escaped under pressure, while 62 livestock were recovered.”
The recovered animals were later returned to their owners through local traditional authorities in the area.
The army reaffirmed that ongoing operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA remain focused on dismantling armed groups, restoring security, and reducing cattle rustling and attacks on rural communities.
Officials also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible intelligence to aid military operations across the region.
