President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate commencement of free healthcare services for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, describing the initiative as essential for safeguarding the dignity and wellbeing of senior citizens.
Speaking after a high-level briefing at the State House on Wednesday, the President stressed the need for swift action in addressing the welfare of retirees, especially those in vulnerable categories.
“This free healthcare initiative is not just policy; it is a matter of dignity and social protection for those who have given their best years in service,” President Tinubu said.
He also ordered the prompt implementation of long-pending pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee to serve as a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners.
The President issued the directive after receiving an update from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, who briefed him on key developments in the pension sector.
In particular, Tinubu urged PenCom to prioritise resolving the lingering issue of police pensions, noting that security personnel deserve a retirement plan that reflects their sacrifice to the country.
“Those who put their lives on the line to protect Nigerians must retire with peace of mind and dignity,” the President said.
According to Ms. Oloworaran, PenCom is working to preserve the value of pension funds amidst inflation and economic volatility. She also disclosed that the Commission is exploring foreign currency contribution options to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to join the national pension scheme.
President Tinubu expressed strong support for the proposed reforms and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic policies and protection for ordinary Nigerians.
“The wellbeing of retirees is a reflection of the nation’s values. We will ensure that our policies reflect care, responsibility, and fairness,” he added.
The PenCom DG also shared details of upcoming reforms designed to expand the reach of the pension scheme and improve the quality of life for retirees across the country.
