President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
The tenure, which was initially due to end on August 31, 2025, will now run through to August 2026.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the extension is intended to enable Adeniyi to deepen the ongoing reform efforts within the Customs Service and complete strategic initiatives that align with the Tinubu administration’s economic agenda.
“These include the comprehensive modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the execution of the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” Onanuga stated.
The Presidency also commended the CG for his performance so far.
“President Tinubu acknowledges Mr. Adeniyi’s unwavering dedication and professionalism. The President is confident that this additional time will further empower the Nigeria Customs Service to deliver effectively on trade facilitation, revenue generation, and securing the nation’s borders,” the statement read.
Bashir Adewale Adeniyi assumed office as Comptroller-General in an acting capacity in June 2023 following the departure of his predecessor, Hameed Ali. He was confirmed as substantive CG in October 2023.
