Popular short-form video platform, TikTok, has removed more than 3.6 million videos uploaded by Nigerian users between January and March 2025, citing violations of its content policies.
The disclosure was made in the company’s Q1 2025 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, which also highlighted a significant rise in global content moderation efforts.
According to the report, the number of Nigerian videos removed marks a 50% increase compared to the 2.4 million taken down in the final quarter of 2024.
TikTok noted that 98.4% of the violative content was identified and removed proactively—before users could report it. Furthermore, 92.1% of the flagged content was deleted within 24 hours of being posted.
“This high rate of proactive detection underscores our continuous investment in advanced moderation systems and user safety,” the platform stated.
In addition to video removals, TikTok said it dismantled 129 covert accounts across West Africa in March 2025. These accounts were found to be part of coordinated influence operations, designed to manipulate public opinion and engagement on the app.
Globally, the platform took down more than 211 million videos during the first quarter—an increase from 153 million in the previous quarter. More than 184 million of these were removed using automated tools, which the platform says are central to its content moderation strategy.
“Our systems remain under constant attack by those trying to exploit the platform. We’re committed to staying ahead of malicious activity, whether it’s through fake accounts, spam, or coordinated influence campaigns,” the report noted.
TikTok also deleted over 44.7 million spam comments, many of which were linked to fake accounts attempting to inflate popularity metrics.
Despite the growing number of takedowns, TikTok reiterated its commitment to building a safe digital environment.
“We remain vigilant in protecting our community. While threats continue to evolve, our resolve to identify and eliminate inauthentic behavior is stronger than ever,” the company affirmed.
