Wimbledon champion, Jannik Sinner, has admitted that luck played a huge role in his journey to lifting the trophy, particularly in his fourth-round clash with Grigor Dimitrov.
Before sealing his fourth Grand Slam triumph, the Italian narrowly escaped elimination after Dimitrov, who was leading 6-3, 7-5, 2-2, was forced to retire with a painful pectoral injury.
The Bulgarian grabbed his right shoulder in distress, left the court for a medical timeout, and returned only to announce his withdrawal, a moment he described as the most heartbreaking of his career.
Speaking to Tennis World, Sinner reflected on the turning point.
“I got lucky against Grigor, but I took it as a sign,” he said. “In tennis, you never know what can happen. You just try to understand why and how certain things unfold.
The world No. 1 added that the incident became a catalyst for his dominant run.
“After that match, I raised my level and maintained it through the last three rounds,” Sinner noted.
