Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, representing Sokoto South, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the African Democratic Congress, citing ongoing internal conflicts and leadership disputes within his former party.
In a resignation letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to the PDP ward chairman of Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward, Tambuwal explained that his decision came after careful reflection and consultations with his political supporters.
“After extensive consultations with my political associates and supporters, I have decided to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” he stated.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed concern over the persistent crises in the PDP, saying they had made it increasingly difficult for him to continue as a member.
“The internal disagreements, leadership disputes, and growing divisions within the party have created an environment that is challenging to navigate,” Tambuwal added.
Despite leaving the PDP, he expressed gratitude for the opportunities the party provided throughout his political career. “I remain thankful to the PDP for giving me the platform to serve Nigeria as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as Governor of Sokoto State,” he said.
Tambuwal confirmed that he, along with his political allies, had joined the ADC to foster democratic principles and provide a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape. “My decision is guided by the belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform rooted in integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,” he added.
Tambuwal’s political career spans service as Speaker of the House from 2011 to 2015, Governor of Sokoto State under the All Progressives Congress from 2015 to 2023, and currently as Senator for Sokoto South. His defection to the ADC is expected to influence political dynamics in Sokoto State, where he remains a key figure.
