A man suspected of attempting to vandalise electrical installations at Borno State University, Maiduguri, has been found dead after reportedly being electrocuted near a transformer on campus.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
Police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, said the deceased, whose identity has not yet been established, was discovered lifeless beside the transformer before his remains were evacuated to the hospital in collaboration with the Borno State Fire Service.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was electrocuted while attempting to vandalise electrical installations,” Daso stated.
He noted that a full investigation into the case has commenced, adding that the police remain committed to protecting critical infrastructure within the state.
According to him, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, PSC, once again warns criminal elements to desist from acts of vandalism and sabotage, as such endanger lives and compromise public safety.”
Daso also urged members of the public to be vigilant and to report suspicious activities around public facilities to the nearest police station without delay.
The development comes amid renewed calls by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for stiffer penalties for vandals targeting national assets.
Speaking in Abuja, FCT Commandant Dr. Olusola Odumosu expressed worry over what he described as “the growing rate of repeat offences among those arrested for vandalism,” attributing the trend to lenient court judgments that fail to deter offenders.
