Traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge was thrown into chaos on Monday morning as residents of Oworonshoki, Lagos, staged a protest against the demolition of their houses by the state government.
The demonstration, which started at dawn, took place on the inward lane of the bridge and forced many motorists and commuters to seek alternative routes to the mainland.
The aggrieved residents claimed that the government pulled down their houses without prior notice or compensation, rendering several families homeless.
The demolition exercise, which began in the early hours of Saturday, was reportedly carried out by a joint enforcement team targeting unapproved structures along the Lekki and Iyana Oworonshoki coastal areas.
During the protest, the demonstrators engaged the state Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, vowing not to leave the bridge unless demolition activities were halted in their community.
Security operatives were later deployed to disperse the crowd and reopen the blocked section of the bridge to traffic.
