Super Falcons’ Babajide congratulates Cameroon after historic WAFCON win

Super Falcons forward, Rinsola Babajide, has sent her congratulations to Cameroon after the Indomitable Lionesses secured their maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.

Cameroon produced a commanding display in Sunday’s final in Rabat, defeating tournament debutants Malawi 3-0 to lift the continental trophy for the first time.

Marie Ngah Manga opened the scoring in the 20th minute, rising to head home from close range and give Cameroon an early advantage.

Naomi Eto doubled the lead 10 minutes later with a spectacular volley before Cameroon added a third goal just before the interval.

Eto raced around Malawi goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo before setting up Ngah Manga, who calmly finished to register her fifth goal of the tournament.

Following Cameroon’s historic achievement, Babajide took to X to congratulate the new African champions.

“Congrats to Cameroon for winning the WAFCON 👏🏾.”

Babajide was involved in several matches for Nigeria during the tournament as the Super Falcons surrendered their WAFCON crown. Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup also marked a first for the country.

Malawi, ranked 153rd in the world and the lowest-ranked team at the tournament, exceeded expectations by reaching the final. Much of their impressive run was powered by sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga.

However, Cameroon’s defence successfully contained the Chawinga sisters in the final, preventing Malawi from completing a remarkable fairytale run.

Cameroon’s triumph also confirmed their place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup alongside Malawi, hosts Morocco and Algeria, who all earned automatic qualification.

South Africa and Ghana still have an opportunity to join them at the global tournament through the intercontinental play-offs.
