Super Eagles goalie Nwabali returns to Chippa United

South African Premier Soccer League side Chippa United have confirmed the return of Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for a second spell at the club.

Nwabali had parted ways with the Chilli Boys in February, shortly after the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, sparking widespread speculation over his next destination.

The 30-year-old was linked with a number of clubs across Africa, including South African heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Reports also suggested he could move to Saudi Arabia, but none of the proposed transfers materialised.

Chippa United have now officially announced his comeback, with the club expressing delight at his return.

The statement on the club’s official page reads, “Chippa United Football Club is delighted to welcome Stanley Nwabali back to the Chilli Boys.

“After taking time away, Stanley Nwabali returns to the Eastern Cape, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the club.”

Questions Surround Nwabali’s Return
Nwabali’s return has raised eyebrows, especially considering the circumstances surrounding his departure earlier this year.

When he left Chippa United in February, it was widely expected that he would secure a move elsewhere after establishing himself as one of the club’s key players.

During his four-year stay, the Nigerian international captained the team and played an important role in helping them maintain their Premier Soccer League status.

Despite months of transfer speculation, however, the goalkeeper remained without a new club.

The wording of Chippa United’s latest announcement has also attracted attention.

While the club now says, “After taking time away, Stanley Nwabali returns to the Eastern Cape, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the club,” it had previously announced his departure on February 5, wishing him success “in the next chapter of his career and in all his future endeavours.”

The contrasting statements have fuelled speculation over whether Nwabali voluntarily stepped away from football or ultimately returned after failing to complete a move elsewhere.

Neither the player nor Chippa United has provided further clarification on the situation. For now, Nwabali’s focus will be on regaining full match sharpness and preparing for the start of the new season.
