Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali marked his return to competitive football in impressive fashion, claiming the Man of the Match award as Chippa United played out a goalless draw with Golden Arrows in their opening 2026/27 South African Premier Soccer League fixture on Saturday.
Making his first official appearance in eight months, the Super Eagles shot-stopper produced a string of outstanding saves to frustrate Golden Arrows, who dominated possession and created the better chances throughout the encounter.
According to FotMob, Nwabali earned a match-high rating of 9.1 after registering six saves, three high claims, three clearances and 12 ball recoveries, making him the standout performer on the pitch.
His defining contribution came just after the hour mark when he pulled off a remarkable double save to deny Ronaldo Van Neel and preserve Chippa United’s clean sheet.
The 29-year-old had parted ways with Chippa United following Nigeria’s campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after both sides mutually agreed to terminate his contract.
He returned to the club last month after enduring a difficult period personally, during which he openly spoke about his mental health struggles following the loss of both of his parents.
Chippa United, who narrowly escaped relegation by finishing four points above the drop zone last season, will aim to secure their first victory of the new campaign when they host Richards Bay on August 11.
Nwabali was left out of the Super Eagles squad for the Unity Cup as well as the international friendlies against Poland and Portugal in May and June.
However, if he maintains his impressive club form, the goalkeeper could earn a recall for Nigeria’s 2027 AFCON qualifying matches scheduled for September.
