Super Eagles begin AFCON journey with 2-1 win over Tanzania

The Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory against Tanzania on Tuesday night in Fes, Morocco, thanks to a decisive second-half goal from Ademola Lookman.

The win earns Nigeria three points in their Group C opener, offering a morale boost after missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria dominated possession for long periods but were challenged by a well-organised Tanzanian side that remained resilient until the final whistle.

The opening goal arrived in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi met an Alex Iwobi cross with a precise header, capitalising on sustained pressure.

A moment later, Victor Osimhen appeared to double the lead, but VAR ruled his close-range effort offside.

Tanzania responded in the 52nd minute through Charles M’Mombwa, who slotted home a first-time finish following a slick attacking move that exposed Nigeria’s defence.

The equaliser briefly rattled the Super Eagles, but Lookman restored the lead almost immediately. Picking up Iwobi’s pass outside the penalty area, the Atalanta forward drove a low, accurate shot past goalkeeper Zuberi Foba, proving decisive for the hosts.

Osimhen, partnered with Akor Adams up front, created several opportunities to extend Nigeria’s advantage but was repeatedly denied by Tanzania’s disciplined backline and the alert Foba.

In the closing stages, coach Eric Chelle introduced Paul Onuachu to help secure the victory.

Tanzania, led by captain Mbwana Samatta, threatened on the counter and came close to an equaliser late on, with Ibrahim Hamad missing a golden chance in stoppage time.

Prior to the game, interim coach Miguel Gamondi had tempered expectations, “I’m very realistic about the possibilities. Maybe Nigeria have 99 per cent, but you never know. Beating Nigeria would feel like winning the AFCON for us, especially at the start of the tournament.”

Ultimately, Nigeria held on for a crucial win, setting a positive tone as they aim to build momentum in Morocco.
