Sokoto suspends fee collection in public secondary schoolsSokoto State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ladan Ala, has ordered all public secondary school principals in the state to halt the collection of fees with immediate effect.
The order comes after the ministry set up a committee to examine grievances and issues surrounding charges imposed in schools.
According to the commissioner, the suspension will stay in force until the committee completes its work and submits recommendations.
In a statement issued by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Mohammad Iya, Prof. Ala cautioned that any principal who disregards the directive would face “immediate administrative action.”
He further emphasized that principals are strictly barred from requesting payment of the Parent-Teacher Association levy, admission fees, testimonial fees, statement of results, or contributions to the Muslim Students Society.
The suspension also covers a range of other payments, including those tied to the Basic Education Certificate Examination results and certificates, answer sheets, screening forms, as well as charges linked to the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and certificates issued by NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS.
