The Sokoto State Government has declared Thursday, June 26, 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of the Islamic New Year, 1st Muharram, 1447 AH.

In an official statement issued by the Press Secretary to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, the holiday aims to allow Muslims in the state to mark the beginning of the new Hijrah calendar with spiritual reflection and devotion.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu, in his goodwill message to the people of Sokoto, urged residents to seize the opportunity for self-assessment and spiritual renewal.

“The beginning of a new Islamic year is a time for us to reflect deeply on our lives. It is a moment to evaluate our actions—both successes and shortcomings—and seek ways to become better individuals in faith and character,” the governor said.

He emphasized the significance of the Islamic New Year as not only a historical event but a period for Muslims to reconnect with the core values of Islam.

“We must use this occasion to embrace the teachings of the Prophet, recommit to piety, humility, and accountability, and contribute positively to our communities,” Governor Aliyu added.

He reiterated his administration’s dedication to supporting religious activities and promoting Islamic principles throughout the state.

As part of the celebration, various Islamic organizations and scholars are expected to hold special prayers and sermons to usher in the new year with blessings and guidance for the months ahead.

The governor concluded by wishing the Muslim Ummah a peaceful, fulfilling, and prosperous Hijrah year.
