At least six persons have been confirmed dead following a lone auto crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Four Square Camp area of Ogun State.
The accident, which occurred at about 11:27 am on Tuesday, also left 23 other passengers with varying degrees of injuries.
The crash involved a white and blue DAF truck with registration number SNA 287 XA.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps, in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi, said a total of 29 passengers were involved.
“Twenty-nine passengers were involved in the crash, which resulted in six deaths and 23 persons sustaining injuries,” Odunsi said.
He disclosed that the truck was travelling from the northern part of the country to Lagos State and was also conveying livestock.
“The vehicle was carrying 35 cows; 29 of them died in the crash, while six were rescued unhurt,” he stated.
According to Odunsi, who is a Superintendent Route Commander, the crash was caused by human factors.
“The suspected cause of the crash was fatigue and speed violation by the driver, which led to loss of control and the vehicle crashing into a nearby bush,” he explained.
He added that FRSC officials were immediately deployed to the scene to manage the situation.
“Our personnel were on ground managing the casualties, and the injured victims as well as the dead bodies were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital, GOFAMINT Camp, and Victory Hospital, Ogere,” Odunsi said.
The FRSC spokesperson noted that the crash caused traffic disruption along the corridor while investigations were ongoing.
He urged motorists, especially commercial and heavy-duty truck drivers, to be safety conscious.
“Drivers are advised to regularly service and inspect their vehicles, maintain safe speeds, ensure adequate rest to avoid fatigue, and strictly observe all road safety regulations,” he warned.
