Serie A: S’Eagles’ Okoye returns as Udinese draw Cremonese

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, made his long-awaited return to action for Udinese in their 1–1 draw against Cremonese at the Stadio Giovanni Zini on Monday, marking his first appearance of the season.

Okoye had been out of competitive football since last season after facing scrutiny over alleged betting-related offences.

Following a months-long investigation, he was cleared of wrongdoing but handed a two-month suspension for fair play violations.

His comeback, however, didn’t start on the brightest note, as Filippo Terracciano put Cremonese ahead just four minutes into the match.

Udinese responded strongly, dominating possession afterward, and eventually drew level through Nicolo Zaniolo’s strike in the 51st minute.

Despite the early setback, Okoye delivered a steady performance between the sticks. He registered two saves, one high claim, and completed 76% of his passes.

Still, questions lingered over the goal he conceded, as the header, though powerful, was directed straight at him, and a quicker reaction might have prevented it.

The Nigerian goalkeeper also had a nervy moment in the first half when he misjudged a cross, almost gifting Cremonese a second goal.

But he redeemed himself in the 58th minute with a crucial one-on-one save to deny Jamie Vardy, showcasing his sharp reflexes and composure under pressure.

Given his five-month absence from competitive football, Okoye’s performance was generally encouraging.

He will aim to sharpen his match fitness and confidence when Udinese host Lecce in their next Serie A fixture.
