Federico Gatti’s dramatic stoppage-time strike rescued Juventus from a seemingly lost cause, as the Bianconeri fought back from 3-1 down to secure a thrilling 3-3 draw at AS Roma, keeping alive their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, despite extending their winless Serie A streak to four matches (D2, L2).
Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma side welcomed a Juve team appearing both physically and mentally drained after a grueling midweek clash that saw them eliminated from Europe’s premier club competition by Galatasaray following a two-hour marathon.
The hosts started the sharper of the two teams, with Niccolò Pisilli racing through on goal early, only for Mattia Perin to make a fine save.
Lorenzo Pellegrini followed up but blazed his attempt over the bar. This seemed to ignite Juve into action, but neither Francisco Conceicao nor Kenan Yıldız could convert promising openings.
The game continued at a frantic pace. Malen was denied at the near post by Perin after Gianluca Mancini nodded the ball into his path from Bryan Cristante’s cross.
Both sides went close before halftime, with Weston McKennie and Cristante missing their headers, but it was Roma who drew first blood in the 39th minute.
Pisilli found Wesley, who curled a superb right-footed strike past Perin from the edge of the box.
Juve responded immediately after the restart. Conceicao scored a thunderous left-footed volley, set up by Bremer from Teun Koopmeiners’ free-kick clearance, levelling the score, marking just his third Serie A goal of the season.
However, Roma reclaimed the lead seven minutes later when Evan Ndicka expertly finished a corner routine involving Pellegrini and Pisilli.
The hosts extended their advantage through Donyell Malen, who chipped the ball over Perin after receiving a perfectly weighted through pass from Manu Koné, his sixth goal since joining Roma on loan from Aston Villa in January. At 3-2, it looked as though Juventus’ comeback dreams were over.
Yet, Juve refused to surrender. Jeremie Boga netted his first goal for the club, finishing smartly at the far post after Zeki Celik’s deflection redirected Edon Zhegrova’s cross.
And in the dying moments, Gatti capped an extraordinary fightback, smashing a long-range effort into the net following a deep free-kick into the box, sending the away fans into ecstasy.
Roma remain three points clear of fifth-placed Como, while Juventus sit four points behind in sixth, keeping their European ambitions very much alive.
