Serie A: Nkunku rescues point for Milan against Fiorentina

AC Milan were forced to settle for a second consecutive Serie A draw on Sunday as a dramatic late goal from Christopher Nkunku rescued a 1-1 result against Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The Rossoneri dropped further ground in the Scudetto race, remaining two points behind table-toppers Inter, who were scheduled to face fellow title contenders Napoli later in the day.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men had to dig deep to avoid defeat after falling behind in the second half.

Milan started brightly and almost struck first midway through the opening period, but Christian Pulisic was denied from close range by an excellent David de Gea save following clever build-up play involving Niclas Füllkrug.

The American winger later fired narrowly wide with a powerful left-footed effort, while at the other end Cher Ndour’s header was comfortably dealt with by Mike Maignan.

After the restart, Fiorentina took control and began to pile on the pressure. Fabiano Parisi tested Maignan with a stinging effort before the Viola finally made their dominance count in the 66th minute.

From an Albert Gudmundsson corner, Pietro Comuzzo climbed highest to guide a header into the bottom corner, putting the hosts ahead.

With defeat looming, Milan found a lifeline at the death. Nkunku, introduced from the bench, latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Youssouf Fofana and fired a sharp finish in at the near post to level the contest in the 90th minute.

Fiorentina nearly had the final say in stoppage time as Marco Brescianini rattled the crossbar before Moise Keane was denied by Maignan, who was in inspired form throughout the evening.

The Milan captain was instrumental in securing the point, producing six saves overall, including two crucial interventions late on. His heroics helped Milan extend their unbeaten Serie A run to 18 matches, their longest since a 22-game streak between January and September 2022.

Despite being outshot, Milan narrowly edged the expected goals battle, registering 1.8 xG from 13 attempts, though only three were on target.

Fiorentina, meanwhile, generated 1.48 xG from 20 shots, largely driven by a strong late surge.
