Serie A: Fiorentina fight back to hold Napoli

Fiorentina fought back to earn a 1-1 draw with Napoli on Sunday, extending their unbeaten start under coach Paolo Vanoli.

Napoli took the lead in the 23rd minute through Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour, who reacted quickly to a loose ball from a corner before sending a controlled volley past David de Gea.

Fiorentina had threatened earlier, with Arthur Atta and Nicolo Fagioli seeing efforts deflected onto the crossbar within two minutes, but Napoli went into the break ahead.

The hosts responded shortly after the restart when Alex Jimenez’s effort took a deflection on its way into the net to bring Fiorentina level.

Both sides had opportunities to claim all three points afterwards, but the two goalkeepers made important saves to preserve the 1-1 scoreline.

The result gives Fiorentina four points from their opening games, while Napoli moved to seven points as they missed the chance to secure consecutive league victories for the first time this season.

Vanoli has now overseen an improvement in Fiorentina’s fortunes since returning to the club following Fabio Grosso’s dismissal after three consecutive defeats at the start of the campaign.

He had previously guided the Florence side to safety in the second half of last season.

Fiorentina had beaten Venezia in Serie A and Pisa in the Coppa Italia in Vanoli’s first two matches back in charge before holding Napoli to a draw.
