Serie A: Cagliari shock Atalanta 2-1

Cagliari continued their impressive start to the Serie A season with a 2-1 away victory over Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors, who had collected six points from their opening three matches, produced another spirited display to claim a notable win against Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Cagliari took the lead in the 19th minute when Michel Adopo delivered a low pass into the box for Paul Mendy, who fired his effort against the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

The goal marked Mendy’s third in Serie A, with all of them coming against Atalanta.

Atalanta responded before the break through Gianluca Scamacca.

Giorgio Scalvini quickly restarted play with a free-kick, allowing Charles De Ketelaere to drive forward before the ball fell kindly to Scamacca, whose angled strike took a slight deflection on its way past goalkeeper Elia Caprile.

The visitors regained the lead in the 61st minute after Sead Kolasinac handled the ball inside the penalty area.

Daniel Maldini calmly converted from the spot, sending Marco Carnesecchi the wrong way to score the first successful penalty of the 2026/27 Serie A season.

Cagliari almost extended their advantage later in the game, while Atalanta pushed for another equaliser through Lazar Samardzic, Franck Kessie and Nikola Krstovic, but Caprile and the visitors’ defence held firm.

The defeat was Atalanta’s second consecutive loss, while Cagliari maintained their strong early-season form with another impressive result.
