Serie A: Cagliari beat Udinese for best-ever start

Cagliari secured a 1-0 victory over Udinese on Saturday to record the best start in the club’s history.

Daniel Maldini scored the decisive goal in the second half after capitalising on a defensive mistake, as Cagliari held on despite sustained pressure from the hosts.

Udinese had the better opportunities early in the second half, with El Hadji Malick Diouf Gueye testing Elia Caprile with a header from a corner.

The Cagliari goalkeeper also denied Kabasele as the home side continued to threaten from set pieces.

Cagliari struggled to create clear chances before the break, with Maldini unable to make the most of a promising attacking move in the 17th minute.

The forward later misplaced a pass that allowed Keinan Davis to shoot narrowly wide.

The breakthrough came in the 54th minute when a poor back pass presented Maldini with the opportunity to take possession.

He rounded Maduka Okoye before calmly finishing into an empty net to put Cagliari ahead.

Udinese pushed for an equaliser and came close in the 73rd minute when Unai Gómez failed to convert from close range after the ball was played across the box.

The hosts continued their late assault, but Caprile produced another important save in the 83rd minute after a mistake by Alessandro Deiola presented Udinese with a dangerous opportunity.

Cagliari successfully defended their lead until the final whistle to claim a historic victory.

The result means the 2026/27 campaign has produced the club’s best start since its foundation in 1920.
