Senegal appeals AFCON title stripping at CAS

The Senegalese Football Federation has taken its battle to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, filing an appeal on Wednesday in a bid to overturn the decision that stripped the country of its Africa Cup of Nations title.

The controversy stems from the final played in Rabat on January 18, where Senegal were initially declared winners after a 1-0 victory over Morocco.

However, the match was later ruled forfeited after Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest of a potentially decisive penalty awarded to the hosts.

Although the team returned after 14 minutes and went on to secure the win, the appeal board of Confederation of African Football overturned the result last week, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory instead.

“The FSF appeal seeks to set aside the CAF decision and declare the FSF ‌winners of AFCON. It also requests an immediate suspension of the time limit to submit an appeal brief until the CAF decision is notified with full grounds,” the CAS said in a statement.

“A CAS Arbitral Panel will be appointed ‌to consider this matter. Following this, a procedural calendar will ‌be established.”

Senegal’s government had earlier demanded a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the decision to revoke the title.

Meanwhile, FSF lawyers are scheduled to address the media at a press conference in Paris on Thursday.
