Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, has demanded an apology from FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his comments threatening to unseat her in the 2027 elections.
Kingibe deemed Wike’s remarks as disrespectful and unacceptable.
The contentious relationship between Kingibe and Wike began after they assumed office, with Wike criticizing Kingibe’s achievements and performance, according to Politics Nigeria.
At a recent event, Wike questioned Kingibe’s ability to be reelected in 2027.
Kingibe responded, stating that Wike’s comments were derogatory and that he should apologize before they can work together.
She emphasized that courtesy demands respect, especially given their age difference.
The tension between Kingibe and Wike stems from Kingibe’s victory over Wike’s ally, Philip Aduda, in the 2023 election.
Kingibe has accused Wike of neglecting her calls and prioritizing his own interests over the needs of FCT residents.
Wike, however, claims Kingibe is frustrated due to not being appointed chairperson of the Senate Committee on the FCT.
“He doesn’t obviously understand the concept of the FCT. If he did, it is nothing personal. He says ‘I don’t want to be her friend.’ How does governance translate into friendship?” Kingibe said during an appearance on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm.
The senator expressed frustration over Wike’s derogatory comments, including a specific remark asking her to go hug a transformer.
“Once he does that, it is all over. We can start afresh but until then, everybody stays in your lane. With all due respect, I am so much older than him. Even courtesy demands he should speak to me like that,” Kingibe stated.
