Report alleges Turji fighters training with new weapons in Sokoto

Fresh concerns have emerged over security in parts of eastern Sokoto State following reports that fighters loyal to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji are allegedly undergoing weapons training in communities bordering Zamfara State.

According to The PUNCH, allegations were contained in an intelligence report released by the Sokoto State Coordinator of the Movement for Social Justice and Good Governance, Basharu Altine, who claimed that the activities are taking place in communities stretching from Bingabale Kudu through Bafarawa East to Bargaja.

According to Altine, intelligence gathered by the organisation suggests that some of Turji’s close associates, including Illa Manawa and Dodo, believed to be the bandit leader’s younger brother, are coordinating the training exercise.

“Our findings indicate that the fighters are currently participating in weapons training and tactical drills using newly acquired arms, including sophisticated weapons reportedly used in recent clashes with security forces,” Altine said.

He further alleged that security information available to the group points to the arrival of additional weapons and newly recruited fighters with advanced combat experience.

“There are indications that some of the new arrivals possess specialised skills in combat operations and weapons handling. Their role, according to sources, is to strengthen and train Turji’s network operating across communities on the Sokoto-Zamfara border,” he stated.

Altine also claimed that night-vision equipment recently linked to Turji formed part of the supplies delivered to the group’s camps.

The report further identified two suspected bandit commanders, Haru Dole and Ibrahim Chimo, as key figures allegedly involved in the movement and procurement of the weapons.

“Sources suggest that Haru Dole and Ibrahim Chimo played significant roles in facilitating the delivery of the arms alongside Bello Turji. Investigations are also pointing to a growing alliance between Chimo and Turji,” Altine said.

He warned that the alleged collaboration could pose a greater threat to communities in eastern Sokoto, citing intelligence reports suggesting plans to expand the group’s operational reach.

“There are increasing concerns that this alliance is part of a broader effort to strengthen their presence in the region.

Intelligence sources fear that coordinated attacks could be planned against some local government headquarters before the peak of the rainy season,” he added.

Altine called on security agencies to intensify surveillance and investigate the allegations to prevent possible attacks and protect residents.

As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had not issued an official response to the claims, which remain unverified independently.
