Supporters of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, have announced plans to stage a mass protest in Aba, Abia State, on Thursday, calling for his release.
The protest, organised by a group known as the Coalition of Lovers of Freedom, has been tagged the “One Million March.”
According to the organisers, the demonstration is expected to draw supporters from different parts of the South-East to Aba.
In a flyer circulated ahead of the event, the organisers urged sympathisers to participate in the rally while maintaining a peaceful approach.
“Supporters of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and lovers of freedom are invited to converge on Aba for a peaceful march to demand his release,” the notice stated.
Reacting to the planned protest, former Abia State lawmaker, Obinna Ichita, appealed to participants to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid any form of violence.
“As Aba residents prepare to gather, I urge all participants to act with discipline, civility and a sense of responsibility,” Ichita said.
He emphasised that although many supporters feel strongly about the continued detention of the IPOB leader, the demonstration must remain peaceful.
“While emotions may run high regarding Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, our strength lies in unity, wisdom and respect for life, property and the rule of law,” he added.
Ichita also cautioned protesters against actions that could lead to confrontation with security operatives.
“Participants should cooperate with security agencies and resist any attempt to politicise the gathering,” he said.
Kanu was earlier convicted on terrorism-related charges after a court ruled that his activities through the IPOB platform incited attacks on security personnel and civilians in parts of the South-East.
