Benfica’s final home game of the season ended in frustration as they were held to a 2–2 draw by a resilient SC Braga, a result that could have major consequences in the race for European qualification.
The draw allowed city rivals Sporting CP to climb above the Eagles into second place in the standings, the final Champions League qualification spot, while Braga confirmed fourth position with the point earned at Estádio da Luz.
Benfica dominate early but waste chances
SL Benfica started brightly and controlled much of the first half, creating several clear openings.
They even thought they had gone ahead early when Ivanovic converted from a corner in the third minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for a narrow offside margin.
Braga offered occasional danger, with Gabri Martínez testing the waters from distance, but it was Benfica who looked more threatening.
Rafa Silva and Andreas Schjelderup both came close, while Braga goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček produced key saves to keep the hosts at bay.
Second-half burst and instant replies
Benfica finally broke through just after the restart. Gianluca Prestianni capitalised on a loose pass from João Moutinho, feeding Rafa Silva for a simple finish to make it 1–0.
The lead lasted barely a minute. Braga responded immediately when Pau Víctor rose highest to meet a cross from Víctor Gómez, powering in a header to level the match.
The tempo remained high, with Fredrik Aursnes and Schjelderup both threatening as Benfica pushed forward. However, Braga’s defensive organisation and Horníček’s sharp reflexes repeatedly frustrated the hosts.
Midway through the second half, substitute Vangelis Pavlidis appeared to have put Benfica ahead after finishing Schjelderup’s low cross, but celebrations were cut short when VAR ruled the ball had gone out in the build-up.
The match then swung dramatically in the closing stages. In the 88th minute, Gorby produced a moment of quality, curling a precise strike into the top corner to stun the home crowd and give Braga a 2–1 lead.
Benfica refused to give up and were handed a lifeline in stoppage time when Schjelderup was brought down inside the box. Pavlidis stepped up and smashed home the equaliser from the penalty spot.
Despite the late response, the draw felt like a defeat for the hosts, who now head into the final day needing a result away at Estoril and a slip-up from Sporting CP against Gil Vicente to reclaim second place and secure automatic Champions League qualification.
