The Federal Fire Service has cautioned prospective recruits to brace up for the physical demands of the profession, stressing that only fit and healthy candidates will withstand the rigours of firefighting.
In a public advisory posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, the Service urged applicants awaiting the release of the recruitment shortlist to prioritize their health and fitness.
“Eat well, rest properly, and exercise regularly while you wait,” the statement read. “Hunger is not part of the training syllabus. We need strong and fit firefighters, not fainting champions.”
The Service further emphasized that firefighting requires not just courage but also physical readiness.
“Your potbelly won’t fit inside bunker gear,” it added in a humorous but pointed warning.
According to the FFS, firefighting gear and rescue operations demand agility, stamina, and endurance, qualities that cannot be compromised.
“The fire doesn’t wait for the unfit—so prepare well,” the advisory noted.
Although the Service has not yet announced the official date for the shortlist release, its early warning is viewed as part of efforts to reduce the number of candidates who may fail due to lack of physical preparedness.
A senior FFS official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the campaign is designed to remind applicants that firefighting is a life-saving profession that requires “discipline of the body as much as discipline of the mind.”
“The public often sees firefighters as heroes, but behind that is rigorous training and readiness. We want recruits who can carry heavy equipment, endure intense heat, and still save lives,” the official explained.
