The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended Hon. Bernard Udemezue, the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, for three months over posts he shared on social media.

According to The PUNCH, Udemezue, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, had alleged in his post that Ayamelum Constituency was being marginalised in the distribution of constituency allowances.

The comments drew backlash within the Assembly, with lawmakers describing them as “damaging content” capable of discrediting the institution.

During plenary last week, a motion on the issue was raised by the member representing Aguata 2 Constituency, Tony Muobike, and was seconded by the Chief Whip, Jude Ngobili, who represents Ihiala 1 Constituency.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, subsequently referred the matter to the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges for investigation.

Presenting its report on Tuesday, the committee recommended disciplinary action. Following deliberations, the Assembly resolved to suspend Udemezue for three months.

Speaker Udeze, while announcing the decision, said, “The House cannot overlook statements that attempt to malign its integrity. Lawmakers must exercise restraint and responsibility in their public communication.”

Another lawmaker, Tony Muobike, added, “Freedom of expression does not mean spreading damaging content about the institution you represent. The suspension is necessary to maintain order and discipline.”

At press time, Hon. Udemezue had not publicly reacted to the suspension.
