Pope Leo rejects debate with Trump over Iran remarks

Pope Leo XIV on Monday responded to political criticism from the United States, stating firmly that he has “no intention to debate” with U.S. President Donald Trump following remarks made about his comments on the US-Iran war.

Speaking to journalists aboard the papal aircraft en route to Algeria, the pontiff made clear he would not engage in any political back-and-forth despite the controversy generated by his earlier statements.

“I am not a politician,” the pope told reporters aboard the papal plane as they headed to Algeria for the pontiff’s first visit to Africa.

He reiterated his stance on focusing solely on peace and spiritual guidance rather than political disputes, stressing that his mission remains unchanged despite external criticism.

“I have no intention to debate with (Trump). The message is the same: to promote peace.”

The comments came as Pope Leo XIV began his first official trip to Africa, with Algeria serving as the opening destination of an 11-day multi-country tour.

The visit is expected to focus on diplomacy, interfaith dialogue, and calls for global peace amid rising international tensions.

While his remarks have drawn attention in political circles, the pontiff maintained that his priority remains advocating for peace and avoiding involvement in partisan disagreements.
