The Oyo State Police Command has issued a public security alert ahead of the July 7 Founders’ Day celebration of the Neo-Black Movement of Africa, also known as the Black Axe cult, warning that the event could spark violent confrontations among rival groups.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, the Command said intelligence reports indicate possible plans for reprisal attacks and other forms of violence linked to the gathering.

“Our proactive intelligence efforts have uncovered credible threats suggesting that rival cult groups may exploit the celebration for acts of retaliation and public disorder,” Osifeso said.

“This raises serious concerns about the safety of residents across Oyo State during the period.”

The police said they have already held sensitization meetings with stakeholders, including hotel and lounge operators, urging them not to allow their facilities to be used by groups with a history of violent activities.

“We’ve made it clear to hoteliers, lounge owners, and those managing studio apartments that any form of collaboration with cult groups, knowingly or unknowingly, is a threat to public safety,” the PPRO said.

Parents, guardians, community leaders, and other influential individuals were also advised to counsel youths against participation in cult-related events or activities.

“We are appealing to the public to engage their children and wards on the dangers of cultism,” Osifeso added. “Everyone has a role to play in preventing violence and ensuring peace.”

As part of security arrangements, police personnel will be deployed to strategic locations across the state. The command assured that it is working to maintain law and order through intelligence-led operations and community collaboration.

“We are leveraging technology and intelligence to prevent any breakdown of law and order. Oyo State must remain a peaceful place for all,” Osifeso stated.

Residents were encouraged to stay alert and report any suspicious gatherings or movements. The police provided emergency contact numbers, including the toll-free line 615 and mobile numbers 08081768614, 09054133071, and 09061299291.

The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasizing that any attempt to disturb the peace would be met with decisive action.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility,” Osifeso concluded. “With the support of the public, we can ensure a safe and secure Oyo State.”
