Police probe viral video of Lagos college students smoking, drinking in hostel

The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing students of Excel College, Ejigbo, Lagos, engaging in drinking, smoking, and dancing inside the school’s boys’ hostel.

Although the incident reportedly occurred in April 2025, the video resurfaced online recently, sparking outrage among parents, educators, and members of the public.

Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, the Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, to take over the case from the Ejigbo Police Division.

“The Command has zero tolerance for acts capable of corrupting the moral fabric of our society. I have directed the SCID to handle this matter thoroughly to ensure that such disturbing behaviour does not repeat itself in our schools,” Jimoh said.

The principal of the school, who also doubles as its proprietor, was earlier invited for questioning.

He reportedly told investigators that the students seen in the video had already graduated from the institution. Nevertheless, he assured police of the school management’s cooperation in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, added that the Command is committed to ensuring accountability.

“Investigation is ongoing and the outcome will be made public. We urge parents, guardians, and school authorities across Lagos to intensify supervision of their children and wards. Proper moral guidance is critical to preventing misconduct that can lead to public outcry,” Adebisi said.
