The Osun State Police Command has begun a formal investigation into the alleged shooting and pursuit of a student and members of his family in Osogbo.
Police authorities disclosed this in a statement on Monday through the Police Public Relations Officer, who said the action followed a viral video and a petition issued by the National Association of Nigerian Students, Southwest Zone D.
According to the statement, the Command’s attention was drawn to claims that the incident occurred along the Itaolokan Junction to Oke Ayepe area of the state capital.
“The Command has commenced an immediate review of the reported incident. Preliminary findings are being gathered, including operational records and eyewitness accounts,” the statement said.
The police also confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, represented by senior officers from the Operations Department, visited the affected victims in hospital.
Authorities said the injured persons were responding to treatment and assured the public that the Command had taken responsibility for their medical expenses.
“The victims are currently receiving treatment, and the Command has undertaken to cover the cost of their care,” the police noted.
The Command added that officers suspected to have been involved in the incident were already under investigation, stressing that reckless or unauthorised use of firearms would attract disciplinary action if confirmed.
“Any unauthorised or reckless discharge of firearms, if established, will not be tolerated. Officers found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary consequences,” the statement added.
Police further called on residents with credible information, including video footage, to assist investigators, assuring that justice would be pursued based on verified facts.
“We urge members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with the investigation. Justice will be served in accordance with the evidence,” the statement concluded.
