The Police Service Commission has sent a monitoring team to Osun State to supervise the conduct of police personnel ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The Punch reported that the delegation, headed by retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, a member of the PSC board and Chairman of its Standing Committee on Police Matters, will monitor officers deployed for the election and assess their compliance with established electoral policing guidelines.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the commission’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Torty Njoku Kalu, said the team would ensure that police personnel maintained discipline, professionalism and neutrality throughout the electoral process.
According to the commission, the deployment is intended to protect the credibility of the election and strengthen public confidence in the conduct of security personnel during the poll.
“The PSC delegation will ensure that officers deployed for the election strictly adhere to the guiding principles governing election duties and uphold the highest standards of discipline and professionalism before, during, and after the polls.
“The Commission is committed to deepening public confidence in the electoral process by guaranteeing that Police conduct remains impartial, rule-based, and civil at all times.
The PSC also called on all officers deployed to Osun to remain apolitical and ensure that eligible voters are allowed to exercise their franchise without intimidation or interference.
“The PSC urges all Police officers assigned to Osun State for the election to display exemplary conduct, remain apolitical, and protect the rights of all citizens to vote freely and peacefully,” the statement partly read.
The commission warned that officers who violate the rules or engage in acts capable of undermining the credibility of the election would face sanctions.
It further directed personnel on election duty to respect citizens’ rights and contribute to ensuring a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
“The PSC reassures Nigerians that it will not hesitate to sanction any officer found compromising the credibility of the election,” the PSC stated.
The deployment comes as 14 political parties prepare to participate in the August 15 governorship election being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The Nigeria Police Force has already deployed 15,000 officers to provide security for the election.
