The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man alleged to be involved in illegal arms dealing after operatives recovered 1,100 rounds of live ammunition from him in Nkpor, near Onitsha.
The suspect, identified as Akpan Godwin, was apprehended on Friday by officers attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Akwuzu, following a tip-off.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspect admitted to being part of a network engaged in the unlawful sale of ammunition.
“Based on credible intelligence, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Akwuzu, arrested one Akpan Godwin, 65, in possession of 1,100 rounds of live ammunition at Nkpor, Onitsha,” Ikenga stated.
He added, “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being involved in the illegal sale of ammunition and also mentioned other individuals connected to the trade. We have intensified efforts to track down his accomplices.”
The police spokesman further assured residents that the Command is committed to dismantling criminal networks in the state.
“Our operatives have stepped up the investigation and manhunt to ensure that all those connected to this illicit business are apprehended and prosecuted. Further developments will be communicated to the public,” Ikenga said.
The Command urged the public to continue to provide timely information that could aid in tackling the proliferation of illegal arms in the state.
