Pensioners give FG ultimatum, threaten naked protest over unpaid arrears

The Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria has issued a stern warning, threatening a nationwide naked protest on November 24 if the government fails to settle outstanding pension increment arrears and palliative allowances.

The announcement was made by the coalition’s National Chairman, Mr. Mukaila Ogunbote, during a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday

Ogunbote, who also serves as Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NIPOST Chapter), said the protest would go ahead if the Federal Government does not honour its commitment to pay the N32,000 pension increment arrears and the N25,000 palliative allowance approved in 2023.

He further revealed that pensioners in the diaspora have pledged to join their Nigerian counterparts, transforming the planned protest into a global demonstration.

Ogunbote appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu to step in and instruct the Minister of Finance and the Accountant-General of the Federation to release the funds.

According to him, many pensioners are dying due to harsh living conditions, unable to afford proper food or medical care.

“We were told that our arrears would be paid within two weeks of the approval, yet nothing has been done. If by November 23, we do not receive payment, all pensioners nationwide will embark on a naked protest on November 24,” he warned.

He expressed frustration that while active workers have received allowances, pensioners continue to be neglected.

“Workers received the N35,000 palliative in a month, but up till now, pensioners have not been paid the N25,000 approved for us. We are more vulnerable than anyone else.”

Ogunbote made a heartfelt plea for timely intervention, stressing the need for payments before December to allow pensioners prepare for the Christmas season.

He also criticised the Nigerian Labour Congress for not giving more robust support to pensioners in their push for overdue payments.

Calling for unity among workers, he argued that government often prioritizes other expenses over the welfare of retirees.

He concluded by urging the Minister of Finance and the Accountant-General to release the owed funds urgently, highlighting the dire situation faced by many pensioners.
