The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Folajinmi Oyekunle has emerged winner of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, sweeping to victory with a comfortable lead over his rivals.
The Returning Officer for the poll, Prof. Abiodun Oluwadare of the University of Ibadan, made the declaration shortly after collation was concluded at Ikolaba High School, Ibadan.
According to him, Oyekunle secured a total of 18,404 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Adewale ‘Murphy’ Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 8,312 votes.
While announcing the official figures, Prof. Oluwadare stated: “Having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, I hereby declare Folajinmi Oyekunle of the PDP duly elected.”
Other contenders in the race included Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress who garnered 88 votes; Olabisi Olajumoke of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, 40 votes; and Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party with 18 votes.
Reacting to the outcome, the elated PDP candidate said the victory marked a new beginning for the constituency. “This win belongs to the good people of Ibadan North. I promise to provide quality representation and honour the legacy of the late Hon. Musiliu Akinremi whose passing created the vacancy,” Oyekunle said.
