PDP appoints Ogunbiyi acting Lagos chair

The Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee has authorised the Lagos State Deputy Chairman, Kayode Ogunbiyi, to assume the role of acting state chairman following the ill health of the substantive chairman, Muka Popoola.

The decision was conveyed in a letter dated November 3, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Umar Bature.

The letter, with reference number PDP/NOS/GF1/Vol.1/009 and titled “Authorisation to Act as Acting Chairman”, was addressed to Ogunbiyi.

Bature said the decision was necessitated by Popoola’s health condition, adding that the deputy chairman would oversee the party’s affairs in the state pending the organisation of a congress.

“Due to the ill health of the substantive Chairman of Lagos State, Muka Popoola, the National Organising Secretary (NOS), on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC), hereby authorises the State Deputy Chairman of the party to act as the chairman with effect from the date of this letter pending when a congress could be organised accordingly,” the letter read.

The authorisation took effect immediately on November 3, with Ogunbiyi expected to remain in the position until a party congress is held to determine the substantive leadership.

The National Organising Secretary also congratulated Ogunbiyi on his new responsibility.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the development places Ogunbiyi in charge of the PDP’s activities in Lagos State pending the conduct of a congress.
