Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upgrading facilities at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, in order to host a Super Eagles fixture.
Speaking on Saturday while declaring open the 81st Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), held in Ibadan, Makinde assured stakeholders that the state was prepared to invest in the necessary infrastructure.
“We are ready in Oyo State to host the Super Eagles. Let us take a look at the Lekan Salami Stadium and identify what still needs to be improved. I give you my word, we will commit the resources required,” the governor said.
Makinde also called for reforms in sports administration, suggesting a single-term tenure for executives of sporting bodies. According to him, such an arrangement would foster accountability, stability, and better performance in governance.
NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, praised the governor for his consistent support of football development and promised that the national team would play a match in Ibadan before the end of Makinde’s tenure in 2027.
“We appreciate your contributions to football and sports. I assure you that a Super Eagles game will take place here in recognition of your support,” Gusau noted.
Former NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, also delivered a goodwill message at the gathering, urging stakeholders to unite behind the current leadership.
The annual assembly attracted high-profile figures from the global football community, including FIFA observers Hamed Haraz and Lyrique Dupiesis, FIFA representative Nadim Magdy, WAFU Executive Director Philippe Tchere, and several Nigerian football administrators.
