President Bola Tinubu has expressed concern over the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states, describing the incidents as a major setback that has dampened the spirit of Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Speaking during his nationwide broadcast on Friday to mark the country’s 27th Democracy Day, Tinubu said the continued captivity of the children remains a source of worry for the nation, while assuring Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to secure their release.
“Although the mood of this year’s Democracy Day celebration has been affected by the abduction of our children in Oyo and Borno states, we remain optimistic that they will return safely,” the President said.
Tinubu stressed that security remains central to the nation’s democratic development, noting that meaningful democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
“Democracy without security is a mirage. That is why this administration declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of over 50,000 additional police officers as well as thousands of military personnel,” he stated.
The President also commended members of the armed forces, police, and intelligence agencies for their sacrifices in tackling security challenges across the country.
“To our armed forces, police, and intelligence services, Nigeria appreciates your sacrifice and commitment to protecting our nation,” he said.
He further acknowledged the contributions of traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders in promoting peace and reconciliation.
“To our traditional rulers, faith leaders, and community heads, thank you for supporting peacebuilding efforts. Government cannot do it alone,” Tinubu added.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening the country’s security architecture and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians.
