The Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Mr. Adekunle Omoyele, narrowly escaped death after being ambushed by gunmen in Osogbo on Monday night.
According to a statement released by the corps’ spokesperson, Mr. Abass Yusuf, and made available to journalists on Tuesday, the incident took place around 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road, opposite Charity Hotel in Osogbo.
Yusuf explained that Omoyele was driving home alone after official duties when unidentified assailants opened fire on his vehicle, which was later found riddled with bullets.
“It is deeply troubling that Amotekun commander could be targeted in such a coordinated and vicious manner,” Yusuf stated.
He further disclosed that, aside from the attack on the road, “apart from the attack same yesterday, 15 unidentified armed men masked, reportedly stormed Omoyele’s private residence and witnesses claimed the attackers arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV.”
Yusuf added that the incident raises serious concerns about the safety of security operatives tasked with protecting lives and property in the state.
“The corps urged citizens to remain calm and also report any suspicious activities to local security agencies for prompt responses and actions.
“The attack is not just an attack on one man but on the symbol of localised security structure,” he said.
He also revealed that the commander sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed facility under protective watch.
Yusuf confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, and investigations into the attack are underway.
