Osimhen scores as Galatasaray win 25th Turkish League title

Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, played a pivotal role on Sunday as Galatasaray clinched their 25th Turkish Super Lig title, leaving Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce to settle for second place for the fourth consecutive season.

Galatasaray comfortably defeated Kayserispor 3-0, with Osimhen opening the scoring to extend their lead to eight points over Fenerbahce, with just two rounds left to play.

In an unusual moment, veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera stepped up to convert a late penalty, sealing the commanding victory.

Galatasaray, who have led the standings since matchday three, now secure direct qualification to the Champions League league phase.

Osimhen has been instrumental to their title charge, netting 25 goals since joining on loan from Napoli last September.

Meanwhile, the ongoing title drought at Fenerbahce, who last lifted the league trophy 11 years ago, could spell an early exit for Mourinho.

Reports from Turkish media suggest the failure to secure silverware might lead to his departure, despite having a year left on his contract.

Mourinho’s side were ultimately undone by their inability to win any of their four derby clashes with Istanbul rivals Galatasaray and Besiktas.

The pressure appeared to mount on the Portuguese tactician, who, after a Turkish Cup quarter-final defeat to Galatasaray in April, drew headlines for grabbing the face of opposing coach Okan Buruk.
