Osimhen returns as Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe share spoils in derby

Victor Osimhen completed the full 90 minutes on his return from injury as Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe settled for a 1-1 draw in the first Istanbul Derby of the Super Lig season.

The 26-year-old was making his first appearance since picking up an injury on international duty with the Super Eagles.

Although he did not hit top form, he remained fit enough to last the entire match in a fiercely contested encounter.

Fenerbahçe salvaged a point through Jhon Duran’s 95th-minute goal, which secured a 1-1 result against league leaders Galatasaray on Sunday.

The dramatic equaliser preserved the home side’s unbeaten record while keeping their rivals narrowly ahead in the title race.

Duran’s late strike at Ulker Stadyumu cancelled out Leroy Sane’s 27th-minute opener, ensuring the single-point margin between the two traditional rivals remained untouched after one of the most anticipated clashes in Turkish football.

Galatasaray retained top spot with 33 points from 14 matches, while Fenerbahçe stayed second with 32.

The draw extended the hosts’ unbeaten streak to 12 games in all competitions, though they missed a chance to move ahead of their archrivals.

The match, officiated by referee Yasin Kol, kicked off at 8:00 PM following tense scenes during warmups, where players from both sides clashed and security had to intervene.

Sane gives Galatasaray the lead

The German winger put the visitors ahead midway through the opening half, making the most of Galatasaray’s limited chances to hand them a narrow lead at the break.

Despite dominating possession with 56.2 percent and registering 17 shots to Galatasaray’s six, Fenerbahçe struggled to turn their superiority into clear chances.

Both teams recorded just two shots on target, with each goalkeeper making only one save.

Disciplinary issues also shaped the match as Fenerbahçe picked up three yellow cards and Galatasaray collected four.

Galatasaray goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir was booked in the 78th minute, while Victor Osimhen earned a caution in the 71st. Fenerbahçe goalkeeper Ederson also received a yellow card in the 66th minute.

Substitutions influence the closing stages

Both coaches turned to their benches in search of a breakthrough.

Fenerbahçe brought on Duran and Talisca in the 63rd minute, changes that proved vital. Manager Domenico Tedesco later added Fred and Oguz Aydin in the 79th minute before introducing Munir Mercan in the 89th.

On the opposite side, Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk introduced Mauro Icardi in the 89th minute, replacing another forward. His arrival came moments before Fenerbahçe’s equaliser.

Yunus Akgun and Berkan Kutlu were added in stoppage time, with Akgun entering in the 94th and Kutlu in the 97th, but neither could alter the result.

Fenerbahçe’s late pressure finally paid off deep into added time when Duran struck, triggering wild celebrations and ensuring the hosts avoided what would have been their first league defeat of the season.

Title race remains finely poised

The draw keeps the competition tight in one of the closest Super Lig title races in recent memory. Fenerbahçe’s dominance, highlighted by seven corner kicks to Galatasaray’s three, ultimately produced just one point, though maintaining their unbeaten status keeps them firmly in contention.

The hosts have now gone six league matches without defeat, recording five wins and a draw. Galatasaray, meanwhile, dropped points late but remained on top of the standings.

Nelson Semedo and Jayden Oosterwolde were cautioned in the 36th and 54th minutes for Fenerbahçe, while Galatasaray’s Mario Lemina and Baris Alper Yilmaz received bookings in the 40th and 63rd minutes respectively.

Both teams opted for attack-minded setups: Fenerbahçe lined up in a 4-1-4-1 with En Nesyri leading the line before Duran came on, while Galatasaray employed a 4-2-3-1 system featuring Osimhen as the lone striker until Icardi replaced him near the end.
