The Ogun State Government has issued a stern warning to residents over the dangers of roadside trading, labeling it a significant safety risk and a leading factor in preventable accidents.
The warning follows a tragic accident at the tollgate area of Ota in Ado-Odo/Ota LGA, which claimed multiple lives and caused extensive property damage.
Speaking at the scene on behalf of Governor Dapo Abiodun, Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele highlighted the dangers posed by street trading, noting that it puts residents in unnecessary peril.
“While accidents can happen, we must adopt behaviours that significantly reduce their occurrence and impact. We are calling on our people to desist from street trading for their own safety,” she said.
She emphasized that the state has provided market stalls and designated trading areas to ensure safer business activities, expressing concern that some residents still choose to trade along busy highways.
Describing the incident as particularly painful because it occurred in her hometown, Salako-Oyedele extended the state government’s condolences to affected families and assured that survivors would receive proper care.
She added that preventive measures are being strengthened to avoid similar tragedies.
The Deputy Governor also commended the prompt action of the Olota of Ota, Abdulkabir Adeyemi Obalanlege, local government officials, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps and road unions in managing the crisis swiftly.
In his comments, the Olota of Ota condemned roadside trading, stressing that the loss of lives could have been prevented if prior warnings had been observed.
He expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls.
Reiterating its commitment to public safety, the Ogun State Government urged residents to make use of approved markets and designated trading centres throughout the state.
