Ogun records 502 gender-based violence cases in 11 months

The Ogun State Government has revealed that at least 502 cases of Gender-Based Violence have been recorded across the state within the past 11 months, raising fresh concerns over the safety of women, girls, and other vulnerable groups.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, made the disclosure in Abeokuta shortly after an advocacy walk marking the 2025 edition of the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV.

According to her, the latest figures “underscore the alarming and deepening crisis affecting women, girls and vulnerable persons.”

Adeleye noted that of the total cases registered, 120 were handled at the state’s Sexual Assault Referral Centres, while the remaining incidents were tracked through the ministry’s area offices and partner organisations.

She highlighted that the incidents — ranging from sexual abuse and domestic violence to child molestation, digital harassment, and intimate partner violence, reinforce the pressing need for strengthened legal protections and a more unified response from institutions to ensure survivor support and justice for victims.

Describing the statistics as “deeply troubling,” the Commissioner warned that the figures represent only a fraction of the violations happening in communities, as “many women and children remain silent out of fear, stigmatisation, or social pressure.”

She further mentioned that the increased number of reports indicates not only a continued prevalence of violence but also survivors’ growing confidence in the state’s support systems.

In her words, the surge “reflects both the persistence of violence and the growing willingness of survivors to seek help due to improved reporting systems.”
