Ogun 2027: Yayi, Bankole, nine others vie to succeed Abiodun

As the countdown to the 2027 general elections intensifies, political activities in Ogun State are heating up, with at least 15 aspirants—11 men and four women, vying to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun, whose second term ends on May 29, 2027.

The race for Oke-Igbehin Government House is attracting heavyweights, technocrats, and seasoned politicians across party lines.

Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, representing Ogun West Senatorial District, is regarded as a frontrunner, reportedly enjoying strong support from several State House of Assembly members.

While speculations about alleged presidential backing linger, Adeola has continued to consolidate his base, strengthening political structures across the state.

Other leading APC contenders include Gboyega Isiaka, Abiodun Akinlade, Dr Tunde Lemo, Sarafa Ishola, Dimeji Bankole, Wale Edun, Bosun Tijani, and Tunji Oredipe.

From the PDP, 2023 governorship candidate Oladipupo Adebutu, aka Lado, remains influential despite internal challenges.

Meanwhile, Segun Showunmi of the Alternative Movement has reportedly secured backing from multiple platforms, including the Labour Party, ADP, and AA. Female aspirants include Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, and US-based Dr Bolaji Odusina.

Agitation for power shift to Ogun West, which has yet to produce a governor since 1976, remains strong. Traditional rulers, led by the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, are actively lobbying for the region.

Religious considerations have emerged, with some Muslim groups advocating for a Muslim successor, though observers note religion has historically played a minimal role in South-West politics.

On Senator Adeola’s prospects, a source close to his camp said, “With the current electoral process and the use of technology, any party that hopes to win must present a candidate who is genuinely popular among the people… If you move around, enter markets, speak to traders… about seven or eight out of every 10 people will mention the same name ‘Yayi.’ That sentiment is widespread.”

The source added that Ogun West, having been excluded from governorship for decades, deserves consideration.

Responding to claims that Governor Abiodun is backing a candidate, his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, stated, “All the aspirants from the APC are all members of the party… One of them will eventually emerge and whoever emerges, will fly the party flag and be supported by the party.”
